TOPIC:  Moving out – Renting, Buying, selecting roommates

AUDIENCE:  9-12th grade

TITLE:  Your first place

UNIT INTRO:

This unit was created for a class titled, Life After High School, it was designed to introduce concepts of housing, roommate selection, the cost of living, rental laws and renting vs home owning.  The following lesson was created to address the topic of cost of living, as it points out the difference in housing prices in different areas by utilizing the popular show House Hunters which airs on HGTV.    Additional material related to the topic of housing is also linked.

STUDENT OUTCOMES

Students will recognize how location affects the cost of living in certain areas

Students will be able to differentiate the benefits of renting vs buying

Students will recognize how different factors play into the cost of housing in certain areas.

Students will identify multiple considerations when deciding to purchase a home.

NATIONAL FCS STANDARDS

11.6.1 Assess financial resources needed to improve interior space.
11.6.2 Assess client’s community, family, and financial resources needed to achieve housing and interior design goals.
